The “Seal and Cut” technique is an outgrowth of the widely accepted “tear-seal” system used for welding unsupported plastic film and sheeting and for imparting a finished edge at the same time. Unsupported materials under the “tear seal” electrode are extruded or thinned sufficiently so that finger pressure is sufficient to separate the web of waste from the product.
In order to adopt the same technique for supported plastic, the “Seal and Cut” technique was developed. The plastic sheeting is welded in the usual manner. However, instead of tearing off the excess with finger pressure, the sealing electrode or die is constructed so that it cuts through the supporting fabric layer.
The original “Seal and Cut” technique has been used extensively in the shoe and handbag industries. The electrode used has two steps: One for sealing using normal pressure and one for cutting using a higher pressure of 25 to 50 tons. The thickness and toughness of the supporting material will vary maximum cutting length.
The economics of the “Seal and Cut” system will depend on the industry to which it is applied. However, any equipment that combines one or more manual operations shows a quick return on investment.
